Froya

Tonight we’ve have the Sabahan songstress in our studio, Michelle Lee or better known as Froya! By day she’s an award winning composer for TV commercials but by night, Froya would entice us all with her bittersweet quirky folk and indie pop electronica music.

Froya was born and raised in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. Her interest in music started after she saw one of her friends playing the piano at the young age of six years old. As she grew, she enrolled to the International College of Music. College brought her to new places in music where she learnt how to play the the cello, saxophone and violin on top of her piano and organ skills.

Froya’s change of scenery from the winds of Sabah to the urban jungle of Kuala Lumpur and the uncertainty of ‘growing up to be an adult’ brought her the inspiration of her debut album, Panic Bird. Her single Uncomprehended Child is well received on Malaysia radio as her second single, Dawn is a highly anticipated one for her fans. As a composer, she won Best Sound Design at the BMW Shorties Award 2012 for Dick Chua’s Murdered short film.

When it’s not about music, Michelle got the name Froya while she was reading a long latin name for a mushroom. She jumbled around a few letters and Froya was born! After that, she found out that Froya was the Norse god for beauty and love, and with that, it is all set in stone. She also notes that when she’s free, she’ll be focusing on her baking skills and loves baking a good pavlova cake!

Froya said she’s done writing for her second album and can’t wait to start producing for it.

For the record, Froya scored 12!
