Heavy Price to Pay for Spreading Fake News

On 2 October, Singapore's new "Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act" came into act, which stipulates that any government minister is able to decide what is a “false statement of fact.”

The government can then order platforms to remove false statements which are “against the public interest” and issue corrections. It may also order internet providers to block access to offending websites or be fined SGD2000 a day up to maximum SGD500,000

We speak to James Gomez, Director of the Asia Centre for more insight.
