Countdown Indonesia – Does Religion Matter?

The simple answer to that question is yes. Religion does determine political behavior. Prabowo Subianto of the Gerindra Party is a former military man with deep roots in the New Order administration of strong man Suharto. His party’s platform advanced a vague notion of religious purification, but after engaging with NGOs has decided to remove that part of the platform. Joko Widodo, popularly known as Jokowi, is from Partai Demokrasi Indonesia Perjuangan and is the governor of Jakarta. He has pledged to remove legislation that discriminates against religious minorities. And finally, both candidates have struck a highly nationalist tone in their respective campaigns. Perhaps even more potent than religion is nationalism.
