Top 5 at 5: Will AI Steal Your Job?

A recent study by the Institute of Strategic and International Studies Malaysia and the World Bank found that three groups of Malaysian workers: Those who are mid-skilled, those who are between 25 and 34-years-old, and women face the highest risk of being replaced by generative AI. With the adoption of generative AI accelerating, we speak to Calvin Cheng, Director of the Economics, Trade and Regional Integration division at ISIS Malaysia about how much we should be concerned about this.

Other stories we covered:

• Schizophrenia on the rise: According to the Health Ministry, reported cases of schizophrenia have increased by 14%, from the years 2021 to 2024, to a total of over 8,000 cases. And yet, specialised care remains inaccessible. We reached out to Lynnette Chai, licensed and registered counsellor, about the gaps that need to be filled.

• Mass protests in Jakarta turn deadly: Clashes between protestors and riot police in Indonesia continue to escalate, with one confirmed death so far. This happened during a demonstration yesterday, when a motorcycle taxi driver was crushed by a police mobile brigade vehicle. We speak to Andreas Harsono, senior researcher at the Human Rights Watch, about the public anger that has led up to this moment.

• Venezuela cozies up to China: Venezuelan president, Nicolas Maduro has been in communication with Chinese president Xi Jinping and China's ambassador to Venezuala, Lan Hu, even calling it a "sister nation". We speak to Guy Burton, Adjunct Professor of International Affairs at the Brussels School of Governance about what's at stake, while Hoo Chiew-Pin, co-founder of the East Asian International Relations Caucus shares insights on the balance of power at play.

• Van Gogh museum in financial trouble: The Vincent Van Gogh museum, home to the biggest collection of the tortured artist’s work, has warned that without 120 million USD in state funding, they’re gonna have to close their doors. We discuss the realities of running cultural institutions, and what we lose without them.
