Yesterday, the police and the Department of Occupational Safety and Health released a report that investigated the Putra Heights fire that occurred on April 1. With over 200 residents affected, the report’s conclusion of no negligence has sparked disagreement among the community. We speak to Francis Koh, Vice Chairman of Putra Harmoni Resident Association for his thoughts on the report and what’s next for the affected residents.
Other stories we covered:
• Peaceful Assembly Act partially ruled ‘unconstitutional’: In a unanimous decision, the Federal Court ruled that while organisers of public gatherings must still notify the police, failure to do so can only result in a fine of RM10,000, not criminal charges. We discuss this with constitutional lawyer Kee Hui Yee and chairman of Bersih, Faisal Abdul Aziz.
• Antibiotic-resistant infections claim children: A 2022 study revealed that over three million children globally die each year from infections that resist antibiotics. With bacteria growing stronger and treatment options dwindling, we speak to paediatric infectious diseases consultant Dr Sangeetha Siniah about what this means for public health.
• Mould in the museum: Conservators in Denmark have identified a new strain of mould damaging artworks and artefacts, raising fears it could spread globally. We speak to Lalitha Thiagarajah, Deputy Head of Conservation at the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia, about the risk this poses to local collections.
• US wants to see your socials before letting you in: The US State Department has announced that applicants under the F, M, and J visa categories must ensure their social media profiles are publicly viewable. This policy, introduced under the Trump administration, is seen as part of a broader crackdown on immigration, including student visas. We discuss the implications.
