Top 5 at 5: Selangor Parking Deal Still in Flux

Selangor Exco Ng Suee Lim says a final deal with MB Inc's subsidiary Rantaian Mesra is expected by August 1st, pending refinements on revenue and contract terms. We speak to Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung to discuss whether the move risks undermining local councils’ financial autonomy.

Other stories we covered:

• Judicial appointments pending Ruler's announcement: As the Conference of Rulers prepares to announce top judicial appointments, Prime Minister Anwar claims the move will reinforce public trust in judicial independence. We asked lawyer Lim Wei Jiet if the announcement will be enough to dispel growing public concern.

• 25 elephants to be relocated: Perhilitan has begun a year-long mission to move elephants from human conflict zones, after 4,900 reported incidents and RM39 million in damages since 2020. We asked wildlife researcher Lim Teck Wyn whether elephant relocation is effective, and if there are better alternatives.

• Banning racist landlords: A new YouGov survey finds Gen Z Malaysians support a legal ban on landlords choosing tenants by race, a move older age groups still oppose. We reached out to Social Democracy Malaysia co-founder, Kusaliny Mahendran to ask what a fair rental tribunal might look like, and what Malaysia can learn from overseas protections.

• Pickleball World Championship kicks off in KL: Over 1,500 players from 20 nations are in KL this week for the World Pickleball Championship, set to generate RM30 million and boost Malaysia’s hosting credentials. We discuss whether this is means pickleball is here to stay.
