Top 5 at 5: New Attorney General Raises Eyebrows

Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar's appointment as Attorney General has drawn criticism from electoral reform group Bersih over the lack of transparency and use of the parliamentary special select committee. We speak to Faisal Abdul Aziz, Chairman of Bersih for his reaction to the appointment as well as his thoughts on the current government's track record when it comes to institutional reforms and separating power between the Attorney General and Public Prosecutor.

Other stories we covered today:

· Nation's 'economic architect' passes: Former Finance Minister Tun Daim Zainuddin has passed away from a stroke at the age of 86 today. In Parliament, MPs paid tribute to Daim, with opposition leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin leading a minute of silence to honour the Kedah-born leader’s contributions to the nation.

· "Datuk" arrested for scamming migrant workers: A Bangladeshi individual with a "Datuk" title has been arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) over fraudulent migrant worker quota applications involving about RM1 million in levies. We reached out to Adrian Pereira, Director of the North-South Initiative, to discuss the implications of this case, including the ongoing human rights abuses and systemic issues affecting workers at the Bangladesh-Malaysia migration corridor.

· New Malay words draw criticism:
The Education Ministry has announced the addition of 12 new Malay words to the national dictionary, many derived from regional dialects and neighboring countries like Indonesia. Mohd Said Bani Che Mat Din, President of Public Relations and Communications (PRCA) Malaysia and an advocate for the national language, shares his views on these changes and the broader impact on the evolution of the national language.

· Popek Popek Parlimen:
Today's session involved an update for the Ministry's plan to review and streamline Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act, the issue of skyrocketing property prices and the lack of affordable housing for low-income groups as well as plans to integrate artificial intelligence into the country's military sector.
