Top 5 at 5: Lifting The Lid On Suicide

The death of a medical professional Dr Tay Tien Yaa who was working at Lahad Datu Hospital has shone a spotlight on workplace bullying and mental health problems in the medical field. We talk about the stigma and suicide prevention measures with Alia Ali, the founder of Awareness Against Suicide.

Other stories we cover in this episode:

· Amid an ongoing civil suit against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Yusoff Rawther is being investigated under the Dangerous Drugs Act for over 300 grams of cannabis and two fake pistols found in his car. He claims to be a victim of a conspiracy. We reached out to Charles Hector, coordinator of the Malaysians Against Death Penalty & Torture (MADPET) for his thoughts on this case.

· The Mahkota by-election will be a straight fight between the Barisan Nasional candidate Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah and Perikatan Nasional’s Mohd Haizan Jaafar. However, both candidates are grappling with their coalition’s relationship with non-Malay voters on the campaign trail. We speak to Syaza Shukri, an Associate Professor of Political Science at the International Islamic University of Malaysia on whether this will be a focal point of the polls.

· The government has shared its draft MOU terms on opposition allocations after Perikatan Nasional rejected it based on claims that this could affect the Federal Constitution. We asked Aira Azhari, Acting CEO of IDEAS, for her thoughts on Perikatan Nasional’s rejection of the MOU.

· Today is the Mid-Autumn Festival, which is regarded as the second most important festival in the lunar calendar. We look at its cultural significance among the Malaysian Chinese community with Dr Jason Ng Sze Chieh, an assistant professor at the New Era University College.
