We continue our coverage of Chinese President Xi Jinping three-day visit to Malaysia, and this time by looking at the 50 years of diplomatic ties, with bilateral trade reaching $212 billion in 2024. We speak about all this with our guest, Dato’ Abdul Majid Khan.
Other stories we covered:
• Malaysia-China infrastructure collaboration: In an interview with CGTV, Transport Minister Anthony Loke has highlighted Malaysia’s partnership with China under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), and was confident in China’s approach in utilising land and sea connectivity. Despite this, there have been criticisms of the risks in BRI financing. Benjamin Barton, the author of “The Belt and Road Initiative at ten; A crucial juncture for China's infrastructure geopolitics” joins us to speak about this.
• Why do we have thousands of unsold properties?: Malaysia faces a significant overhang of unsold Bumiputera residential units, particularly in the RM300,000–RM500,000 range, with 72% unsold for over three years. For more insight on this, we speak to Dr Nur Fareza Mustapha, research associate from Khazanah Research Institute.
• Singapore’s election countdown begins: Singapore dissolves Parliament, setting the stage for its 14th General Election on May 3. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong faces his first electoral test, with the ruling PAP introducing over 30 new candidates to address challenges like high living costs and housing affordability. Opposition parties aim to capitalize on PAP’s declining vote share amid political scandals and updated electoral boundaries. We get into it.
• UiTM’s KKK controversy: A viral video of a group of students from the university's Dengkil campus dressed as members of the KuKluxKlan has caused public outrage, with certain quarters presuming it to be a glorification of racist organisations. The university has defended its students, claiming that it was part of a class project. We delve into it.
