Top 5 at 5: A Call to End Intimate Partner Violence

Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) and 24 civil society groups are urging the government to amend the Domestic Violence Act 1994 to recognise intimate partner violence (IPV) as a form of abuse, citing gaps in protection for survivors. With over 7,000 domestic violence cases reported in 2024 alone, they call for immediate measures to address the issue. We spoke with PSM member Tamyra Jane to discuss their push for legal reform and better protection for survivors.

Other stories we covered:

The safety of our pipelines: Concerns mount over gas pipeline safety as community leaders and NGOs question preventive measures following the Putra Heights explosion. We speak to safety practitioner Dr Krishna Bala about the effectiveness of pipeline technology and the need for stricter land-use practices.
E-Permit system for forest reserves: Hikers can now apply for permits to explore Selangor's 71 permanent forest reserves via the SeForest e-Permit System. Selangor EXCO Jamaliah Jamaluddin and hiking blogger Jenn from MeowtainPeople.com joins us to talk about the system's benefits and areas for improvement.
Social media addiction strains long-married couples: Excessive social media use, particularly TikTok, is creating emotional distance and conflict in older marriages, contributing to rising divorce rates. Dr Anasuya Jegathevi Jegathesan from the University of Cyberjaya speaks to us about the impact on relationships and shares strategies for couples to reconnect.
When a monkey yodels better than you: A study has revealed that monkeys surpass humans in yodelling abilities, thanks to extra vocal membranes enabling dramatic pitch shifts across nearly four octaves. Apparently, evolutionary trade-offs have allowed humans to gain clearer speech, at the loss of this unique vocal feature. We get into it.
