Recently, Kuala Lumpur made its mark on the global creative map by joining the UNESCO Creative Cities Network as a Creative City of Design. With this recognition, KL now stands alongside Malaysian peers like Kuching — already a Creative City of Gastronomy — and Ipoh, which was designated a Creative City of Music in 2023. On the global front, Kuala Lumpur joins other design‑forward cities such as Berlin, Dubai and Helsinki — all part of the worldwide network of Creative Cities of Design. Today, we explore what this designation really means for the city, its creative communities, and how Kuala Lumpur hopes to shape its future on both the local and international stage.
