Work: Gig Now, Regret Later?

A couple of recent headlines relating to the gig economy caught our attention. First, about 300 Grab delivery riders held a protest demanding that Grab resolve several issues affecting them. This was followed by deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi saying he was dedicated to developing a gig economy commission. Meanwhile, economy minister Rafizi Ramli said fixing the job market’s structure would be more effective than the government intervening in the gig economy. We discuss these various facets of the issue, and how to balance the immediate concerns of gig workers with the long-term view of job market improvement.
