75 million youths around the world are unemployed. Only half of youth surveyed by McKinsey in 2012 believe that their undergraduate studies improved their employment opportunities, and almost 40% of employers say a lack of skills is the main reason for entry-level vacancies. Closer to home, more than 50% of Malaysia’s fresh graduates are deemed to have unsatisfactory English communication skills amongst other lacking skillsets, and yet, many of these inexperienced job-seekers expect unrealistically high starting salaries. Why does this gap in skillsets exist and how do we address this?
