If you're a Facebook user in Malaysia, this week in particular you would have seen a flood of cartoon versions of your friends taking over your newsfeed. The social media giant's new feature allows you to make your own Avatar, a cartoon-like version of yourself, similar to Apple's Memoji and Snapchat's Bitmoji feature. We explore how and why avatars have become so popular in the virtual world.
