University Rankings are a Scam

Sean Matthews has been working with the Institute of Democracy and Economic Affairs, or IDEAS, on a project to address governance in higher education. His recently published paper is titled “Autonomy and Accountability in Higher Education: Lessons from Ghana and Mexico.” He explains why looking at universities outside the Anglosphere is more instructive for Malaysian universities seeking to improve their scholarship, why chasing rankings is a bad idea for those not already amongst the elite universities, and how Ghana and Mexico offer alternative models for us to emulate.
