Five Minutes to Change One Life

Dr Sanduk Ruit, Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology

14-Nov-16 15:00

Five Minutes to Change One Life

The leading cause of blindness is cataract, which is responsible for 51 percent of all blindness. What makes this statistic tragic is the fact that cataract is treatable, but most who are afflicted by it stay blind because of barriers to healthcare. Dr Sanduk Ruit is the pioneer of the “Nepal method,” a cataract microsurgery which reduced the cost of treatment by more than 10 folds. Over the last thirty years he has successfully treated over 120,000 people across the developing world and taught his technique to other eye surgeons. We speak to Dr Sanduk about his work and the centre he help founded - the Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology.
