Elder Abuse and Neglect

First described in medical literature during the 70s, studies show that elder abuse is now a common occurrence in both developed and developing countries. A survey by Universiti Malaya’s Prevent Elder Abuse and Neglect Initiative, or PEACE, had some disturbing findings. They found that one in 10 elders experienced abuse and neglect in urban areas, while one in 20 suffer a similar fate in rural areas. Here to discuss these findings are researchers from PEACE - Dr Noran Hairi, Associate Professor at the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya, and Dr Sajaratulnisah Othman, Associate Professor at the Department Of Primary Care Medicine, Universiti Malaya.
