Integrating Special Needs Children into Mainstream Schools

The Ministry of Education is working towards integrating special needs children into mainstream schools. As part of this effort, MOE teachers are currently undergoing training on how to manage and facilitate this integration. Clinical psychologist Jochebed Isaacs, who is a trainer involved in this initiative, Dr. Nan Hui from the Wisconsin Early Autism Project, and Su Se Hwa, principal of Sam McCoy Foundation, speaks to Lee Chwi Lynn about the challenge of implementing inclusive education here in Malaysia.

Note from Madam Su: "Since its inception in 2008, the Sam McCoy Foundation Learning Centres for special needs children and young adults have built a reputation for itself for teaching the un-teachable since its inception in 2008. As such, we have taken the decision to expand, by building the School of Light, a one-stop quality centre to meet the needs and aspirations of special needs persons. The School of Light will have a capacity of up to 100 students and state of the art facilities, and will cost RM7-10 million. We would thus like to appeal to your generosity for a contribution to the construction of our new school. We hope that you will share in our excitement for a better life and brighter future for the very many special needs persons amidst us. Donations can be made to account number 3184638235 (Public Bank)."
