For his master’s thesis, titled “From Kingdom to Government,” Koh Chien Aun read through all history textbooks in the Secondary School Integrated Curriculum (KBSM) series since 1989 to understand how ideas of the nation-state and ethnic identities are constructed and reinforced. He comes on the show to explain his findings, the challenges of carrying out a research project like this, and how the Kerajaan system came to occupy two-fifth of our history textbooks’ total content.
