Public Health: Do We Have A Drinking Problem in Malaysia?

The issue of alcohol has hit the headlines in Malaysia in recent weeks, but not for reasons related to safety or health. Controversies over names and licensing aside, the bigger problem related to alcohol intake is excessive use and addiction, which leads to health problems and societal issues. Assoc Prof Dr Anne Yee, Clinical Addiction Psychiatrist, University Malaya Medical Centre, joins Azrul Mohd Khalib, CEO of the Galen Centre for Health & Social Policy, to discuss what kind of risky drinking behaviours are prevalent in Malaysia, why it is important to treat alcoholism as a health disorder, and what kind of alcohol control strategies are needed.
