Mind Matters: When Children Are Depressed, What Can We Do?

1 in 8 adolescents in Malaysia have had suicidal thoughts while 1 in 10 adolescents have attempted suicide. Those are some of the concerning statistics that have been revealed by the latest National Health & Morbidity Survey 2022, which focuses on adolescent health. On this month’s Mind Matters series, we speak to Nur Arfah Zaini, who is both a clinical psychologist as well as a licensed & registered counsellor, to discuss what the data in the survey tells about the burden of mental health issues among adolescents and how we can better support them in school and at home.

This segment talks about self-harm and suicide, and may be a difficult topic for some listeners. If you need to talk about it, do look for local support within your community, or call helplines like Talian HEAL 15555, MIASA's 24-hour helpline 1800-1800-66 or Befrienders KL 03 7627 2929.
