Mind Matters: Away From Institutionalisation & Towards Community Care

When we think of people struggling with their mental health being placed in psychiatric institutions, it’s usually not a pretty picture. In fact, psychiatric institutions have had their fair share of stigma and horror stories about how their residents are treated. But in recent decades, we have seen a shift in mindset towards the importance of community care instead, to better support people struggling with their mental health. What does community care mean? Are there circumstances where institutionalised care is still necessary? On this episode of Mind Matters, consultant psychiatrist Dr Vicky Loo Tsui Huei weighs in on how we can best support people struggling with mental health disorders regardless of the type of care they need.
