Doctor in the House: Dr Yahya Awang

He is known for performing the coronary artery bypass surgery on former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammad in 1989. He went on to play an instrumental role in establishing the National Heart Institute of Malaysia, better known as IJN in 1992. It was there that he performed Malaysia’s first heart transplant five years later. He is Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Tan Sri Dato’ Dr Yahya Awang. With more than 30 years of experience, Dr Yahya has performed no less than 5,000 open-heart surgeries and trained more than 50 cardiac surgeons to meet the needs for the nation. He joins Dr George Lee to share stories from his illustrious career.
