A Link Between Climate Change and Suicide?

Every year, thousands of farmers from India commit suicide, and researcher Tamma Carleton, from the University of California at Berkeley, suspects this may be related to climate change. In her new study, published just last week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), she compared almost five decades worth of suicide and climate data and concluded that global warming and temperature variations in India may have had “a strong influence” on more than 59,000 farmer suicides over the past 30 years. She joins us from California to discuss her findings in detail.

*Additional clips sourced from the programme, "Reasons behind the alarming rate of farmer suicides in India" part of NDTV and Piramal Foundation's 'Cultivating Hope' campaign, created to raise awareness on the issue of farmer suicides in India.
